NEILI (Pajhwok): Twenty-two people have been killed as a result of snow avalanches in different areas of central Daikundi province, an official said on Thursday.

Asadullah Sarwari, head of the provincial Natural Disaster Management Authority, said emergency has been declared in Daikundi after 22 people were killed in avalanches in Miramour, Asherli, Sharistan, Pato Sangtakht and Bandar districts.

Nine womeninfo-icon were among the dead, he said.

A total of 32 avalanches occurred in the province during the past 24 hours, playing havoc with people’s lives and properties.

Earlier in the day, Arif Yasa, the Meramor district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that seven people including six members of a family were killed by an avalanche in the Hesar Rubat area of the district on Wednesday night. He said one person had been missing. Several roads in the district have been closed by heavy snow.

Meanwhile, a heavy avalanche struck a house in the Kata Sib village of the district, killing 60 animals, the official said.

While Sarwari said they had identified areas prone to avalanches and floods and increased funds for countering the threats but 90 percent of homes were substandard in these areas.

He said in most of areas prone to natural disasters lacked telecommunication services.
