Peace deal may be inked by end of month: Taliban

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Peace negotiations with the United States in Doha have concluded, the Talibaninfo-icon say, suggesting the two sides could sign a final deal within a couple of weeks.

“We have agreed on major issues and could most likely sign the peace accord by the end of February,” The News quoted a senior Taliban leader as saying.

Privy to the peace talks that saw many ups and downs, the Taliban source revealed both sides had agreed on create a friendly environmentinfo-icon in Afghanistaninfo-icon before inking the peace accord.

Taliban leaders, who could stop fighting for a few days, hinted at extending the ceasefire and even ending hostilities if all went well, according to the newspaper.

The potential peace agreement would be signed will be inked in Doha, according to sources in the militant movement. Worldinfo-icon leaders, including rulers of the Muslim countries, Europe, Afghanistan’s neighbours, NATOinfo-icon, UN and OIC will be invited to the ceremony.

Once the deal is wrapped up, the US will ensure the release of 5,000 Taliban inmates from detention facilities in Afghanistan. Up to 11,000 Taliban fighters are presently in prisons.

In return, the Taliban would free 1,000 prisoners -- most of them members of the Afghan security establishment.

Meanwhile, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters in Islamabad they had obtained commitments from the Taliban on security issues.
