Trump, Modi want terror safe havens eradicated

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): India and the United States say they have a shared interest in a united, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The two sides also voiced stout support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process in the war-devastated country.

A joint statement, issued at the end of President Donald Trump’s visit to India on Tuesday, said the process should result in sustainable peace and cessation of violence.

They also called for the elimination of terrorist safe havens and preservation of the gains Afghanistan had made over the last 18 years.

President Trump welcomed India’s role in continuing to provide development and security assistance to help stabilise Afghanistan.

Both sides denounced any use of terrorist proxies and strongly condemned cross-border terrorism in all its forms.

Modi and Trump called on Pakistaninfo-icon to ensure that no territory under its control was used for terrorist attacks.

They also stressed the need for bringing to justice perpetrators of Mumbai and Pathankot attacks.

They called for concerted action against all terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Jaish-i-Mohammad, Lashkar-i-Taiba, Hezb-ul-Mujahideeninfo-icon and the Haqqani Networkinfo-icon.
