MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Uzbekistan also closed its border with Afghanistaninfo-icon on Monday morning to prevent the outbreak of coronavirus.

Mir Habibullah Guzar, police chief for the Hairatan port in Balkh province, told Pajhwok Afghan News Uzbekistan had partially shut its border.

He explained the Afghans, who were currently in Uzbekistan, could return home, but no one was allowed to enter the Central Asian state.

Naseer Ahmad Qasemi, head of the provincial chapter of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, confirmed the border closure.

He feared people would face problems if the border stayed shut for a long time,. “I hope the gate will remain open for imports. If this doesn’t happen, prices of essential items will increase,” he warned.

He urged the government to discuss the issue with Uzbek officials and find a solution.

Munir Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, said no suspected cases of coronavirus had been registered in the province so far.

He believed Uzbekistan might have taken the step due to coronavirus cases in Afghanistan. Farhad said the border had been closed for a short time and they were striving to talk to Uzbek officials in this regards.
