KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon beat Ireland in under the DLS method in a rain-hit opener of the Twenty20 series against in Greater Noida on Friday.

The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is a mathematical system employed to calculate target scores and reach outcomes in rain-shortened limited overs matches.

Afghanistan, after rain curtailed a pleasurable encounter at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sportsinfo-icon Complex, were declared winners, the BBC reported.

Irish Captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and opted to bat on a decent track, with openers Paul Stirling (60) and Kevin O’Brien (35) forging a 63-run partnership.

Balbirnie and Stirling provided the visitors with decent stand of 48 runs. But middle-order batsmen failed to maintain the momentum.

Harry Tector, who scored a quick-fire 29 from 17 deliveries, saw Ireland post a total of 172 for six in the stipulated overs.

Ace spinner Rashid Khan, finishing with 3-22 from four overs, was the pick of Afghan bowlers. He also bagged the prized wicket of Stirling.

While chasing the 173-run target, Afghanistan lost five batsmen to reach 133 in 15 overs, with Najibullah hitting an unbeaten 42.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Samiullah Shinwari chipped in with 28 each. As the fourth wicket fell, another run out, Ireland regained the momentum of the game.

In the 15th over, Boyd Rankin removed Shinwari, leaving the game poised. The hosts needed 40 from 30 balls with five wickets in hand.

To Ireland’s chagrin, rain washed out the remaining five overs. Afghanistan -- slightly ahead of the DLS par score -- and were declared victors by 11 runs.

The second match of the T2o series is scheduled for Sunday.
