Will stay in touch with UK on Afghanistan, says US

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The United States says it will stay in touch with Britain on the ongoing peace process and intra-Afghan dialogue.

"We will remain in close consultation as the peace process moves forward and intra-Afghan negotiations commence," Defense Secretary Esper said.

At a Pentagon news conference with his British counterpart Ben Wallace, Esper said the US would retain in Afghanistanthe necessary capabilities to protect its troops and allies.

“We will also ensure that a drawdown of US forces is aligned with commensurate reductions by the UK and our other partners,"a statement from the Department if Defense quoted him as saying.

In response to a query, Wallace said troops from all nations served in Afghanistaninfo-icon in an attempt to bring peace and stability to that country.

"I think the biggest betrayal to the young men and womeninfo-icon of all the allies who lost their lives would be to not try and achieve peace…” he remarked.

Wallace added he was reassured by the American defence chief that the peace deal the US signed with the Talibaninfo-icon in Doha on Saturday was conditions-based.
