Migrants’ return triggers coach fare hike at Islam Qala

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The passenger coach fare has drastically increased in Islam Qala Port of western Herat province amid increasing number of returning refugees from Iran.

Officials of the Refugee Department and some returnees have expressed their concern over the increase in passenger coach fare.

Javid Naadem, Refugee and Repatriate Department head, said up to 10,000 refugees arrived from Iran into Herat on a daily basis and this prompted coach owners to increase fare from Islam Qala to Herat City and from Herat City to other provinces.

He said before the spread of Coronavirus the fare from Islam Qala to Herat City hovered between 150 and 250 afghanis but now it had surged to 800 afghanis.

“The problem in these days is the lack of transport vehicles to transfer the migrants. At every zero point of Islam Qala and inside Herat City, the private sector increased the fare beyond common man’s reach,” he said.

A number of returning migrants said they were concerned about the increased passenger car fares and shortage of passenger coaches.

Mohammad Raza, hailing from Bamyan province, who just returned from Iran said: “In Iran I was very worried over the spread of Coronavirus, so I decided to come to Afghanistaninfo-icon, but here I could not find vehicle and the fare ranges from 800 to 1,000 afghanis.”

Mohammad, a resident of Daikundi coming from Iran on Sunday, he said: “We came from Islam Qala yesterday evening and we could not find buses there. Now I got the ticket of 303 passenger bus to go to our own province.”

Governor Abdul Qayum Rahimi acknowledged the problem and added sometimes similar situation happened in emergency situations.

Pajhwok reached out to the Transport Department in Herat City but officials there were not available for comment on the lack of transport and increase in fares in Islam Qala.
