KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Journalists Center (AJC) on Tuesday said violence against journalists 21 percent increased during the outgoing 1398 solar yearinfo-icon, urging efforts to reduce it.

AJC head Ahmad Quraishi told an event marking ‘Journalist Day’ here that the center registered 116 cases of violence against journalists this solar year, compared to 92 cases last year.

He said the figures showed violence against journalists increased by 21 percent this solar year.

He added that five journalists and media workers were killed, 22 injured, 28 threatened, 32 insulted, 18 kidnapped, eight arrested, six beaten up and four others were threatened with weapons this solar year.

Most of the violence against journalists was attributed to government officials and workers, he said.

Quraishi suggested that a joint committee of media outlets and government should be created for responding to violence against journalists cases.

Increased movements of militant groups, deteriorated security and economic problems of media were matters worth concern, he said.

Mohammad Sarwar Danish, second vice-president who also attended the meeting, said that the government strongly supported freedom of speech and would cooperate with media in resolving their problems.

He said that a representative of media would be also added to the list of negotiators for intra-Afghan talks to share their views and demands during the negotiations.

Liaqat Layaq, a journalist of Etilaat-e-Roz media outlet, received the reward of the Journalist of the Year at the end of the meeting.

Pajhwok Afghan News reporter, Jamila Karimi, was among nine other journalists who received appreciation letters for good reporting.
