JALALABAD (Pajhwok): In the aftermath of coronavirus spread, President Ashraf Ghani issued a decree to close all educational institutions in the country but some religious seminaries in eastern Nangarhar province remain open.

Some madaris in Jalalabad and some districts of Nangarhar are still open in violation of the presidential decree.

People quote madrasa directors as telling students that coronavirus is not for Muslims therefore they would not close them.

Ghulamullah, a resident of Jalalabad City’s 6th Police District, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a seminary engaging at least 500 girls was still open near their home.

Obaidullah Shinwari, the Provincial Council member, acknowledged that many religious schools in the province were still open and it was a serious threat to the public healthinfo-icon.

Mualvi Mohammad Daud Mujahid, director of Hajjinfo-icon and Religious Affairs for Nangarhar, said around 1,200 registered and unregistered madaris existed in the province.

Mujahid said now he had decided to send representatives to madaris to close them but some madaris sought permission from them for their graduation ceremonies.

Religious scholars consider closure of madaris in such circumstances a positive step and believe self protection is vital.
