HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Provincial Council (PC) head of western Herat province on Tuesday accused the central government of negligence in dealing with coronavirus in the province.

PC head Kamran Alizai told reporters that the central government had allocated 400 million afghanis to fight coronavirus without having the authority to spend this amount.

He asked the president to give the situation in Herat serious attention and issue special decree to allow the utilization of available fund.

Referring to curbs on people’s movement over coronavirus fears, he criticized the restrictions, saying the government had not actually helped the province.

He said the government was not serious about people’s lives and what they eat when stay home.

Meanwhile, Herat residents complained about poverty and restrictions on their movement.

Wakeel Ahmad, a daily wager, said: “We have no bread to eat, the government has shut down the whole city, what our children eat now? We have nothing to eat.”

Herat Governor Abdul Qayyoum Rahimi acknowledged some challenges and added every poor family had been distributed aid package.

He also confirmed allocation of millions of afghanis but did not give clear answer regarding how the fund should be used.

“Funds have been allocated to the province, the healthinfo-icon ministry also sent its funds, but about their utilization I want to tell Heratis that there should be transparency. I have signed the use of 150 million afghanis,” he said.
