Time for end to war in Afghanistan: Guterres

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Fighting in Afghanistaninfo-icon has intensified after his call for a ceasefire between the warring factions, says the United Nations secretary-general.

“In many of the most critical situations, we have seen no let-up in fighting and some conflicts have even intensified,” the UN chief noted.

António Guterres, speaking to journalists in New York via a video link on Friday, underlined the need for robust diplomatic efforts to meet these challenges. To silence the guns, we must raise voices for peace.”

In a statement from the UN, he said armed groups in Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and Libya had not fully adhered to his call to lay down guns during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking with reporters via a video link, Guterres said that his call for a global ceasefire had been well received around the worldinfo-icon by Pope Francis and many others as part of efforts to tackle COVID-19.

In Afghanistan, where fighting has increased, a team including five womeninfo-icon was established for direct negotiations with the Talibaninfo-icon, he added.

“I believe the time has come for the government and the Taliban to cease hostilities as COVID-19 looms over the country. I pledge my full support,” he remarked.

Healthinfo-icon systems in conflict zones had been crippled by years of fighting and health professionals there were often targeted by airstrikes and ground attacks, he lamented.
