Donors frustrated by Ghani-Abdullah rift: Wells

Donors frustrated by Ghani-Abdullah rift: Wells

Apr 07, 2020 - 16:15

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Trump administration has once again asked President Ashraf Ghani and his main rival Dr. Abdullah to sort out their political tiffs amid the Covid-19 crisis.

While announcing final results from last year’s presidential vote, the Independent Election Commission declared Ashraf Ghani the winner and Abdullah the runner-up.

However, Abdullah rejected the outcome, alleging widespread fraud in the ballot. Subsequent talks between the political foes have failed to yield any breakthrough.

Frustrated by lingering Abdullah-Ghani row, the US has slashed $1 billion in aid to Afghanistaninfo-icon. Last month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met the bickering leaders, but both stuck to their guns.

According to media reports, the $1 billion would come from a $4.2 billion Pentagon fund that underwrites about three-quarters of the Afghan security forces' annual budget.

“As the worldinfo-icon gets slammed by Covid-19, donors are frustrated and fed up by personal agendas being advanced ahead of the welfare of the Afghan people,” a senior US diplomat said.

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Alice Wells tweeted late on Monday the US welcomed Ghani’s reversal of a decree trifurcating the finance ministry.

“Welcome media reports that President Ghani reversed his decree dismembering Afghanistan's Ministry of Finance. Donor confidence depends on responsible and inclusive leadership,” Wells wrote.
