KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The government would set free 100 Talibaninfo-icon prisoners today (Wednesday), a National Security Council (NSC) official says.

NSC spokesman Javid Faisal told AFP: "We are doing our part in the agreement. The peace process should move forward."

Additional inmates would be freed depending on Taliban’s response, he said, hours after the US called for commencement of the prisoner swap.

Faisal explained the 15 commanders the militant movement wanted to be released were not among those being freed today,

Under the US-Taliban peace pact, the Afghan government has to free 5,000 rebel prisoners in exchange for 1,000 pro-government captives.

On Tuesday, Taliban's political spokesman Suhail Shaheen said no more negotiations would be held with Kabul on prisoner releases.

He blasted the President Ashraf Ghani’s government for intentionally delaying the release and violating the Doha peace agreement.
