Joblessness drives Nangarhar boy to suicide

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A boy committed suicide in eastern Nangarhar province after losing hope due to poverty, local officials said on Saturday.

The victim family living in 8th police district of Jalalabad City, the provincial capital, said their son rendered jobless due to lockdown in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, for the last many days.

Local people told Pajhwok Afghan News that the boy committed suicide when his father gave him 20 afghanis to bring something for lunch.

They said police arrived at the scene and demanded money from the slain boy’s father as the police accused him of killing his son.

People said they collected some money for the boy’s father to give it to police.

But provincial police headquarters said the incident was under investigation and if police personnel were found guilty, they would be introduced to judicial organs.

Malak Nasrullah, a tribal elder, in 8th police district, told Pajhwok after the incident, three policemen arrived at the scene, they asked the family to pay them 100,000afs or they would take their son’s body to the police headquarters for further investigation.

He said he along with another elderly person Haji SayedAlam collected 100,000 money and gave it to the policemen in order not sham them in the area.

SayedAlam told Pajhwok the policemen took money despite their bad behavior.

Mohammad Kabir, the slain boy’s father, told Pajhwok the incident resulted from the family’s poor economic situation.

He said his son committed suicide as they had nothing for eating at home.

He said this morning both he and his son went to out to work somewhere but they didn’t find work as the whole city was quarantined, adding after arriving back home, his son asked him to give him some cash but he had only 20afs at his pocket.

Mohammad EimalNiazai, Nangarhar police chief, told Pajhwok the certain policemen were under investigation.
