Global death toll from coronavirus tops 200,000

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The number of coronavirus-related deaths around the world has surpassed 200,000, with more than 2.8 million people infected, news reports say.

After emerging in the Wuhan city of China last December, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread to at least 200 countries, affecting millions of individuals.

In the initial weeks, mostly Chinese people were infected and killed by the virus, which has now been controlled by Beijing. But the disease is currently spreading rapidly in Europe and America.

Statistics showed on Saturday more than 2.8 million people have been infected worldwide and 200,008 have died from the disease -- most of them in European countries and the US.

Data from Johns Hopkins University in the United States indicate around 800,000 people have recovered from the pandemic and returned to normal life globally.

Media reports say more than 900,000 individuals have contracted the virus in the US, where more than 52,000 have been killed as of Saturday morning.

In Pakistan, nearly 12,000 people have been infected and 250 killed. About 88,000 individuals have been infected and 5,500 killed in Iran.

At least 25, 000 have been infected in India, where the pandemic has claimed 780 lives. Around 15,000 people have been infected and 128 killed by Covid-19 in Saudi Arabia.

Also on Saturday, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Kabul said 133 new COVID-19 cases had been registered in Afghanistan, taking the nation’s tally to 1,463.

It added 206 Afghans had recovered and 44 others, including four doctors, died from the disease.
