Killing of Afghans by Iranian guards being probed

May 03, 2020 - 09:23

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Kabul says it is looking into allegations that dozens of Afghan migrants were thrown into a river by Iranian border guards.

Around 50 Afghans being smuggled into neighbouring Iran were arrested by Iranian guards and thrown into a river between the two countries, media reports claimed on Saturday.

Some 25 men drowned or have been missing in the wake of torture at the hands of the Iranian guard, according to several media outlets, which also carried footage of the migrants. .

Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar, reacting to the reports, had ordered a delegation to investigate the claims, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Despite emphatic denials by Afghanistaninfo-icon-based Iranian diplomats, eyewitness Shah Wali told a news organisation in Kabul that 57 Afghans were trying to cross the border in Herat province.

However, he said, they were detained thrown into the Harirod River. The outrageous incident occurred in the Zolfaqar Outfall. The victims are said to be from Herat and Faryab provinces.

In reaction to the harrowing reports, the Iranian consulate in Herat denied the arrest of Afghan migrants by the country’s border guards.

Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for the Herat governor, confirmed receiving the claims about "Iranian individuals" throwing Afghan nationals into the river.
