PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The United Nations has decided to pay Rs12,000 each to 36,000 Afghan refugee families trapped in a lockdown in Pakistaninfo-icon.

Minister for SAFRON and Narcotics Control Shehryar Khan Afridi made the announcement while addressing a gathering of Afghan refugees in Islamabad on Saturday.

He also distributed food packages to 1,500 families at an Afghan refugee camp. Afridi said in the second phase, UNHCR planned to give Rs12,000 to each family.

‘Food news' about the peace process was emanating from Afghanistaninfo-icon as Pakistan was facilitating talks to help stabilise the war torn-neighbour, he remarked.

Intra-Afghan negotiations would start soon, laying the basis for peace and development of the region, Afridi hoped.

The restoration of peace in Afghanistan would pave the ground for the dignified repatriation of refugees to their homeland, the minister added.

“Now it is up to the worldinfo-icon and UNHCR to immediately divert funds towards food supplies for the trapped refugees," he continued.

He appreciated China and Japan for allocating funds to the UNHCR. He said China had decided to provide food packages to Afghan refugees.
