Drowning of migrants: Iran ready for joint probe

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Iran has again vehemently rejected allegations that its border guards forced into a river dozens of Afghan migrants trying to sneak into the neighbouring country for work.

Nearly 50 Afghan citizens trying to enter Iran in search of work were allegedly thrown into Harirud River near western Herat province by Iranian guards.

Some 25 men drowned or have been missing in the wake of torture at the hands of the Iranian border police, according to several media outlets. .

At a media briefing on Wednesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “We sent an official note to the Afghan Embassy in Tehran, announcing our readiness to work jointly with the Afghan side to investigate the allegations.”

IRNA quoted Seyyed Abbas Mousavi as saying that Iran saw its borders with Afghanistaninfo-icon as frontiers of peace and friendship, highlighting its willingness to have friendly relations based on mutual respect with the neighbour.

“As earlier stated by various officials, the Islamic Republic strongly denies reports that Iranian border guards have forced a number of Afghan citizens to cross Harirud River, causing them a (deadly) incident,” Mousavi added.
