Taliban free 5 police among 20 captives in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon have released 20 prisoners including just five policemen in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Wednesday.

Earlier a day, the Taliban  announced the release of another 20 prisoners in Kandahar province.

Taliban’s Qatar Office Spokesperson SuhailShaheen said 20 government prisoners were released on Tuesday in Kandahar province.

He added the Taliban offered fares to every released prisoner and sent them home.

Police spokesman Jamal Nasir Barekzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had released 20 prisoners in Shah Walikot district late on Tuesday.

He said  the Taliban handed 20 prisoners over to ICRC as part of the US-Taliban agreement.

He added five policemen were among the 20 men released by the insurgents who the Taliban had arrested in different parts of the province.

Each of the released policemen was given 5,000 afghanis cash aid and a pair of cloth by the provincial police chief.

Also on Wednesday, the National Security Council (NSC) said 52 more  Taliban prisoners have been released as part of efforts to advance the peace process and check the Covid-19 spread.

The Taliban inmates were freed late on Tuesday in compliance with President Ashraf Ghani’s March 11 decree, NSC spokesman Javid Faisal tweeted.
