May 09, 2020 - 10:08

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Thousands of Afghan nationals stranded in the border town of Landikotal have finally found their way back home via the Torkham land route.

Around 4,000 Afghans, including ailing womeninfo-icon and children, were allowed by Pakistani guards to return to their homeland after they spent nearly a week in Landikotal mosques.

Most of them including ailing women and children had been staying in two mosques in Landi Kotal Bazaar, commercial buildings and even abandoned railway tunnel near Torkham.

Dawn quoted border officials as saying that most of the stranded Afghans had no legal travel documents. However, they were allowed to return home on humanitarian grounds.

Asked to observe social distancing in line with anti-coronavirus standing operating procedures by sitting in groups, they were permitted to cross the Durand Lineinfo-icon in a disciplined way.

The exact number of the returned Afghans on Wednesday also could not be ascertained as no official record was kept by any authority.
