Delay in flour supply to bakeries hampers bread scheme

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) says the distribution of free bread has been ongoing in 22 provinces despite problems but the delay in supply of flour to bakery shops has hampered the process in some cities.

The free bread distribution project for deserving families was extended to 28 more provinces of the country, President Ashraf Ghani’s office says.

The announcement came on Saturday when dozens of people rallied in Kabul against what they called the government’s failure to deliver them free bread.

IDLG spokesman Syed Shah Saqeem told Pajhwok Afghan News the project had been launched through municipalities in major cities last week.

He said the scheme was extended to remaining 28 provinces on Saturday afternoon amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected many poor households.

In the five big cities, according to IDLG official, each of 136,000 impoverished families will receive 10 pieces of bread on a daily basis until the end of fasting month.

However, he said they were unable to distribute the bread yesterday in Gardez, Sharana, Bazarak, Sar-i-Pul, Ghazni, Asadabad, Mehtarlam, Maidan Shahr, Paroon, Taloqan and Ferozkoh because bakery shops expressed their inability to prepare free bread for the given number of poor people until evening.

He said the problem was with bakery shops as they feared preparing bread in haste would lose its quality but today they would prepare bread in all the cities.

He said the bread could not be distributed yesterday in western Ghorinfo-icon province after six people including two policemen were killed when a protest over food aid distribution turned violent. At least 14 protestors were wounded in the provincial capital, Ferozkoh, on Saturday when they clashed with the security personnel

Saqim said they were in contact with all cities and hoped the free bread would be distributed to the deserving people today. He said the scheme had improved in the five cities where more deserving families received the aid than listed.
