JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents of Ghanikhel district in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday protested against the district administrative chief and accused him of corruption.

Assembling in the main district bazaar and chanting slogans, the protesters also accused the district mayor of extorting shopkeepers.

Mohammad Rahim, one of the protesters, alleged that District Chief Malem Mashooq had embezzled funds allocated for coronavirus and other assistance and did not hand them over to deserving persons.

He alleged the district mayor collected illegal money from shopkeepers and recently he collected money for coronavirus fund.

Azizullah, another protester, said the protesters wanted the district chief and the mayor to be dismissed and referred to the Attorney General Office.

Governor Spokesperson Attaullah Khogyani said if documents supporting allegations against the district chief and mayor were provided, they would be dismissed and referred to the judiciary.

It is worth mentioning that womeninfo-icon activists also staged protest against the district chief recently.
