No coronavirus patient in our ranks, say Taliban

May 21, 2020 - 16:17

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon on Thursday rejected claims that some of their leaders and commanders had contracted coronavirus, saying there was no patient among their ranks.

Sources close the Taliban say a number of Taliban leaders and members have been infected with coronavirus.

The infected Taliban leaders include deputy head of the insurgency, Sirajuddin Haqqani, Mualvi Noruddin Torabi, Mullahinfo-icon Fazal, Mullah Samad Sani, Hamidullah Akhunzada, Mullah Amir Khan Mutaqi, Mullah Nasir, Pir Agha and a number of commanders.

The sources say many family members of these infected Taliban leaders have also been infected with the virus, with unconfirmed reports say some Taliban members had died of the disease.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected the claims as baseless, saying no one in the movement was infected with coronavirus.

He said the false rumors were spread on social media to create confusion among the masses.

The novel virus had infected the public healthinfo-icon minister, the Kabul mayor and a number of Presidential Palace workers, but all have recovered.
