US vows to push for long-term RiV, ceasefire in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hailed President Ashraf Ghani’s announcement to free up to 2,000 Talibaninfo-icon prisoners.

Pompeo telephoned President Ghani and Reconciliatory Council Head Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday night in which the US assured Afghan president for long term ceasefire and Reduction in Violence (RiV).

“Last night I and Dr. Abdullah received a call from Sec Mike Pompeo. He thanked the Afghan government for initiating the brave process of releasing up to 2,000 Taliban prisoners. He asserted that the U.S. will push for a long-term ceasefire/RiV and start of direct negotiations,” the president said in tweet.

The Taliban and Afghan government are observing three-day ceasefire during Eid-ul-Fitr.
