JALALABAD (Pajhwok):  Poppy crop in eight districts of eastern Nangarhar province near producing yield as security forces have launched strict eradication drive.

Farmers said they cultivated poppy because they did not get refined seeds, urea and other assistance that made it hard for them to earn profit from other crops.

Ghanikhel, Spinghar, Sraraod, Pachiragam, Khogyano, Hesarak and Sherzad are those districts where poppy had been cultivated and is near producing yield.

Security forces, however, claimed eradicating poppy on over 300 acres land but in most areas farmers continue collecting opium from poppy plants.

Khogyani is one of those districts where farmer cultivated poppy crop on most of their areas. They are busy in their lands, despite the fact that the crop is not looking good.

Mohammadullah, one of the farmers said: “We did not get refined seeds or urea, village elders distribute the assistance among themselves and other crops without poppy have no profit.”

Sahib Dad, another farmer who cultivated poppy on half an acre of his land, said in the past he used to cultivate poppy on the entire land but due to government warnings and price decline he cultivated poppy on half acre of land.

Police Spokesperson Farid Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News poppy cultivated in the Hesarak, Rodat, Khogyani, Spinghar, pachir Agam, Hesarak and Sraroad districts.

Agricultureinfo-icon Director Inamaullah Sapi said they ensure transparency in the distribution of refined seeds, urea and other assistance to the farmers.
