New SoP for transit trade supplies to Afghanistan

New SoP for transit trade supplies to Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Pakistani transporters have announced their boycott of carrying transit trade items across the Durand Lineinfo-icon to neighbouring Afghanistaninfo-icon via Torkham.

The boycott has been prompted by coronavirus-related standard operating procedures (SOP) initiated by the government on Tuesday, according to Daily Times.

The strategy has been devised jointly by Pakistani and Afghan officials as part of a strategy to resume transit trade supplies to the landlocked country.

“Pakistani transporters will not be permitted to cross the Torkham border into Afghanistan. At zero point, they will hand over loaded trucks to Afghan drivers who will drive back the vehicles within 24 hours after delivering the goods,” the newspaper said.

Shakir Afridi, head of the Khyber Transport Union, confirmed approving the government’s SoP and resumption of transit supplies to Afghanistan.

Goods-laden trucks had already been stuck for three to four weeks in Afghanistan after delivering transit commodities, the transporter explained.

Additionally, Afghan drivers have little experience of driving Japanese-manufactured trucks and drive roughly. The move may result in financial losses for transporters.
