KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The government has rejected as groundless the Pentagon’s claim that half of the Afghan army and police personnel are infected with the coronavirus.

The Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday: “Based on our assessment, the (Pentagon) report that says 50 percent of security and defence forces have been infected with the coronavirus is inaccurate.”

A statement from the ministry said all preventive measures had been taken before the virus spread and security leadership had issued instructions to all army and police units.

After several months of the virus outbreak in Afghanistaninfo-icon, the ministry said, vulnerability among the security forces had been kept at the lowest level.

Earlier, The New York Times reported the Pentagon assessment that say at least 50 per cent of Afghan security and defence forces had been infected with the Covid-19 pandemic.

It said the infections had overshadowed joint operations and training of Afghan forces by their US military experts.
