Covid-19: ‘Calamity’ feared in Herat maternity ward

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A dozen of doctors and nurses working at the maternity hospital in western Herat province have tested positive for coronavirus and they are currently quarantined.

Sayeeda Sayeed, director of the 100-bed maternity hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News that at least 170 healthinfo-icon workers, including doctors, specialists, nurses and others worked in the hospital.

She said 12 members of the staff, including doctors and midwives, had been tested positive for 40 percent Covid-19 signs could be recognized in them.

A catastrophe would erupt if the situation continued, she feared, adding that about 150 womeninfo-icon gave birth daily in the maternity hospital.

She added about 20 doctors and midwives were currently quarantined and 12 of them had contracted the disease.

She warned the health sector would be unable to cure patients if people’s recklessness against coronavirus continued.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for the public health department, said blood sample taking process from workers of the maternity hospital had been launched.

He also believed some workers of the hospital showed symptoms of the disease and workers and a special team had been sent there to collect their blood samples.
