KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock (MoAIL) on Monday said watermelon’s yield “is expected to reach nearly 690,000 metric tons this season--six percent up over the previous year -- in western Farah province.

Watermelon was cultivated on more than 18,000 hectors of land in Farah last year, producing over 560,000 metric tons of the fruit.

But this number is likely to surpass 6890,000 metric tons this year, when more than 19,000 hectors of land has been cultivated with watermelon in Farah.

Abdul Manan Matin, Farah agriculture department head, told Pajhwok Afghan News this year’s watermelon yield showed a six percent increase, compared to the previous year.

He said efforts were underway to find reasonable market prices for the farmers’ yields this year.
