Health workers make 5pc of virus-infected Afghans

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Coronavirus has spread to all Afghanistaninfo-icon’s provinces, with healthinfo-icon workers constituting five percent of the total Covid-19 infected patients, the Ministry of Public Health said Thursday.

In all the 34 provinces, so far 43,569 people have undergone coronavirus tests and of them 18,054 have tested positive, the ministry said, adding so far 300 have died and 1485 others recovered from the infection.

The fatalities include 13 health workers and doctors and 850 other doctors and paramedics have contracted the disease. The infected health workers make five percent of the total infected people.

The Public Health Ministry said most of the infected doctors and nurses contracted the disease in Kabul, Herat, Nangarhar, Balkh, Kandahar and Kunduz provinces.

As many as 270 health workers have contracted the virus in western Herat province, according to the provincial Public Health Department.

In eastern Nangarhar province, the number of infected doctors and other health workers stood at 177 and tests of another 40 workers were awaited, said provincial Public Health director Ismail Stanikzai.

“Of these patients, 86 are in the zonal hospital, 40 in Fatema Al-Zahra hospital, 17 in ICO, 9 in the prison hospital and 40 in district clinics.”

So far 300 people have died from the pandemic and they were aged between 40 and 69 years and more than half of them were men.  The total 297 deaths as of Wednesday included 42 womeninfo-icon, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

The health ministry says more fatalities are expected from coronavirus that will continue to spread further in Afghanistan in the coming weeks.
