Owners want private schools reopened in Kandahar

Owners want private schools reopened in Kandahar

Jun 04, 2020 - 20:26

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok):  The association of private school owners in southern Kandahar province on Thursday asked the government to allow them to open schools by applying precautionary measures against coronavirus.

All private and public sector schools were closed about three months back after the outbreaks of the novel Covid-19 infection.

The call to reopen private schools in Kandahar was made by dozens of owners of private schools who arrived at the press club in Kandahar City on Thursday.

They said they had shared a strategy with the provincial government with regard to reopening private schools by observing all precautionary measures against the virus, but there had been no response.

Speaking on behalf of the private school owners association, Bashir Ahmad Basharmal said they incurred huge losses as a result of the schools’ closure which had rendered about 2500 teachers and other workers of the private sector jobless.

He said many public places remained open, but schools were kept closed as a result of what he called “useless” quarantine.

Basharmal announced they were opening the private schools from Saturday and asked parents to send their children to the lessons.

However, the provincial educationinfo-icon department says the central government has not yet decided about opening of schools and therefore the schools would remain shut.

Nazar Mohammad Samimi, the department spokesman, said all schools in the province would be reopened if decided so by the central government.

He asked parents not to send their children to schools in order to rescue them from contracting the virus. He said a strategy about the reopening of schools had reached the governor’s house and the private sector should wait until a decision was made.
