3.3m afs teachers’ salaries ‘looted’ in Gardez

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): One month salary of 400 teachers amounting to 3.3 million afghanis was looted while being transferred to Samkani district of southeastern Paktia province, an official said Monday.

Educationinfo-icon Director Kochi Zazai told Pajhwok Afghan News the money was looted in Gardez City, the provincial capital, on Sunday noon.

Zazai said four officials of the department were taking the money in their car and they claimed the money was taken away by armed robbers.

He said all the four officials have been arrested in connection with the incident and currently they were being interrogated by intelligence operatives.

The education director did not believe the money had been looted in the heart of the city as there was not clash occurred between the robbers and the officials.

He said several similar incidents had taken place in the past due to lack of a bank branch in Samkani district.

He added, “Teachers from Darizadran, Ahmadaba and Sayed Karam districts receive their salaries themselves from bank.”

Meanwhile, Najibullah Afghan, a teacher in the district, expressed his deep concern over the incident and urged the authorities concerned to take measures to prevent such incidents. He also urged the government to establish a bank branch in their district.
