Killing of human rights advocates denounced

KABUL (Pajhwok): The US, NATO, United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) have strongly condemned the killing of two employees of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in an explosion in Kabulinfo-icon.

US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and NATOinfo-icon’s Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) for Afghanistan Stefano Pontecorvo denounced the killings in separate tweets.

Khalilzad said: “The targeted killing of Fatima Khalil and Jawid Folad, two Afghans dedicated to the cause of fundamental human rights, is an anti-human act. We condemn this terrorist attack in the strongest possible terms.”

The NATO SCR also lamented the bombing: “I strongly condemn the attack targeting human rights advocates who work to protect the Afghan people. My deep condolences to the families of the victims, colleagues & friends.”

United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA) also denounced the killing of two AIHRC staff members in Kabul blast.

UNAMA tweeted: “There can be no justification for attacks against human rights defenders. Immediate investigation needed with perpetrators held to account.”

The EU said: “Appalled by senseless cowardly killing of AIHRC employees. Our thoughts are with families of victims. This is an attack against fundamental democratic values.

“Standing up for these and human rights is more important than ever, going into intra-Afghan peace negotiations.”

The two employees of the commission were killed on Saturday morning when the bomb attached to their vehicle went off on the eastern outskirts of the capital.
