Intra-Afghan peace talks should begin ASAP: Pakistan envoy

Jul 01, 2020 - 12:13

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Peace talks between the Afghan government and the Talibaninfo-icon will begin soon, hopes a senior Pakistani diplomat.

But Zahid Nasrullah Khan, Pakistaninfo-icon’s ambassador to Afghanistaninfo-icon, saw the release of remaining Taliban prisoners and a reduction in violence as the final hurdles.

In an interview with Reuters, Khan said he was "cautiously optimistic" and that intra-Afghan talks could commence in July.

The ambassador called for a cut in violence –to create an enabling environmentinfo-icon and to reach that magic figure of 5,000 prisoners freed.

He voiced concerns at mounting violence around the county, where 23 civilians were killed in Helmand province on Monday when rockets hit a cattle market.

"The rising violence is a concern for Pakistan as it is for other countries that want to see the US-Taliban agreement implemented in letter and spirit …” the ambassador remarked.

He said the Pakistan government had been persuading the Taliban to lower the violence level. “It's very important."

The peace parleys should commence as soon as possible so that a ceasefire agreement could be signed, the diplomat said.
