Date for intra-Afghan talks next week: Ghani

Jul 02, 2020 - 14:54

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said strategies to release Talibaninfo-icon prisoners and intra-Afghan talks will be finalized next week.

During an exclusive interview with the state-run television on Wednesday night, the president said possibility of talks exited between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Qatar.

President Ghani said Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Germany, Norway, China and Russia offered to host intra-Afghan talks and added that Afghan government may ask Japan to host such talks as well.

He said the roadmap was that all rounds of talks will not be conducted in one country, as the government wanted the process to be inclusive and arrangement for such talks will be made in coming weeks.

The president said until next Sunday the issue of prisoners’ release would be finalized and a date for intra-Afghan talks would be decided the same week.

In line with the US- Taliban Peace Agreement in February, the Afghan government has to free 5,000 Taliban while the Taliban should release 1,000 Afghan government prisoners.

However, after four months of the agreement, the prisoners release issue could not be resolved and intra-Afghan talks could not started.

The Afghan government claims it has released nearly 4,000 Taliban inmates while the Taliban say they have so far released 700 Afghan security personnel.

“The Taliban should release government prisoners as this process could not be implemented unilaterally,” said Ghani.

The president said there was consensus on peace in the country, but there was no consensus on the cost which was going to be paid.

Referring to formation of the cabinet, the president said he introduced his nominees and said now people should ask Dr. Abdullah Abdullah to refer his picks.
