KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The US Senate has shot down a proposal on incorporating the pullout of American forces from Afghanistaninfo-icon in a larger defense policy bill.

Sen. Rand Paul’s proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act was rejected 60-33, a Washington-based news website reported.

According to The Hill, the proposal would remove US soldiers from Afghanistan within a year and give them a $2,500 bonus.

Also sponsored by Sen. Tom Udall, the measure would also repeal the 2001 authorization for the use of military force once American troops have withdrawn from the country.

Paul was quoted as saying: "Our amendment will completely end the war in Afghanistan. ... It is not sustainable to keep fighting in Afghanistan generation after generation."

However, James Inhofe urged lawmakers to vote to set aside the proposal, arguing the amendment was not the "best way" to end the war in Afghanistan.

Inhofe said the amendment called for a calendar-based withdrawal from Afghanistan and undermined expected peace negotiations.
