Taliban want all prisoners freed before peace talks

Jul 04, 2020 - 11:48

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon insist on the release of their 5,000 prisoners ahead of the start of intra-Afghan peace negotiations, a Pakistani newspaper reported on Saturday.

At their latest meeting in Doha, the Taliban and the US peace envoy failed to agree on a date for intra-Afghan negotiations, The Daily Times said, citing sources.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed Mullahinfo-icon Baradar and his team met Zalmay Khalilzad, US International Development Finance Corporation CEO Adam Boehler and their delegation.

“The meeting focused on the Afghan peace process, quick release of prisoners, commencement of intra-Afghan negotiations and other related issues,” Mujahid said.

However, the two sides could not agree on a formal date for the start of the talks due to differences on the release of prisoners, the newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying.

The Taliban reportedly insisted on the release of 5,000 prisoners in line with their peace agreement with the US, signed in February.

Taliban sources told the daily Baradar pressed for the release of all 5000 prisoners before the start of the negotiations, as promised in the agreement.
