KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A number of Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon or lower house members on Monday suggested inclusion of mother’s name in national identity cards by amending the law.

Mariam Sama, a lawmaker from Kabul, told today’s session of the house that inclusion of mother’s name in ID cards was the right of mother and was not against Shariahinfo-icon.

“When names of father and grandfather of a person is mentioned in the ID card, so why not the name of his or her mother who has more right on their children than their grandfather,” she said.

She asked for amendment to the national ID cards distribution law and said that mother names were included in people’s ID cards in the whole worldinfo-icon and it should be the same in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Raihana Azad, a lawmaker from Daikundi province, held similar views and said that the names of mothers must be included in a person’s ID card because it was their right.

“Adding the name of mother in ID cards is a respect to the mothers and the house should make a decision on this issue, she said.

A number of other lawmakers also held similar views.

Mir Rahman Rahmani, Wolesi Jirga speaker, said it was the right of mothers that their names were included in their children’s ID cards.

He directed the Internal Duties Commission of the house to present a plan for amendment of the ID cards distribution law so the house would make a decision about it.
