KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An international conference, attended by the representatives from 20 countries and international organisations, has stressed the need for reduction in violence ahead of intra-Afghan talks.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the video conference titled “Strengthening Consensus on Peace” was organised by the Afghan government with regional countries on Monday evening.

Addressing the conference, President Ashraf Ghani said the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon and the region at large would be the champions of peace.

The participants highlighted the recent progress in the peace process, significant reduction in violence by the Talibaninfo-icon, the prisoners swap, intra-Afghan talks and combating the coronavirus.

The MoFA statement added the participants of the conference stressed the need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to pave the way for confidence building.

Referring to the UN Security Council report on the high level of violence and the OIC chief’s statement, the participants called on Taliban to reduce violence as soon as possible and thereby pave the way for the start of peace talks.

The participants reiterated their support for the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process and called for safeguarding the shared values and achievements.
