Covid-19 fund largely embezzled, allege MPs

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon or lower house of Parliament members on Wednesday accused the Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon (MoPH) of embezzling most part of the Covid-19 pandemic fund.

Sayed Selab, a lawmaker from southern Kandahar province, told today’s session that the house had several times asked the MoPH to provide answers to questions about the allocated budget for fighting the Covid-19 across the country, but the ministry was yet be provide information.

According to his information, the Covid-19 budget in the Ministry of Public Health has largely been embezzled.

He said not only the Covid-19 fund was looted, there was corruption in distribution of medicines, which should be investigated seriously.

Shah Pour Hassanzai, a lawmaker from central Logar province, said: “Deep corruption exists in the MoPH, the Wolesi Jirga commission has been demanding documents from the MoPH for the past two months but it did not provide so far.”

He said during the certain period, the Wolesi Jirga Commission held five meetings to investigate MoPH activities, but officials from the ministry did not turn up.

He added that mostly the allocated budget for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic had been embezzled and urged the house to summon the authorities concerned to brief the house in this regard,

 A number of other lawmakers held similar views about the issue.

Speaker Mir Raham Rahmani also spoke about the embezzlement in budget for fighting coronavirus and said Wolesi Jirga commissions’ heads should make a decision in next session.

Also on Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said at least 210 new positive Covid-19 cases were detected in different parts of the country over the last 24 hours, taking the nation’s overall tally to 33,594.

At least 17 people lost their lives to the pandemic and 549 others recovered from it in the past 24 hours. The number of deaths thus reached 937. As many as 20,700 people have recovered from the disease so far.

The Ministry of Public Health has called on the Afghan people to follow the instructions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
