KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): High Council for National Reconciliation Chairman Abdullah Abdullah has hit out at the Talibaninfo-icon for not reducing violence in the country.

Speaking at end of a four-day conference on "Strengthening Regional and International Consensus" here on Friday, he and blamed the insurgents for hampering progress in the peace process.

The event was attended by representatives of at least 20 countries and international organisations, including the United States and the United Nations.

Abdullah said the meeting was focused on an inclusive Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process and preserving achievements of the last 19 years.

On the ticklish issue of prisoner releases, he said: “We will get to the number 5,000. I have taken it up with President Ashraf Ghani. That’s part of the confidence-building phase.”

He believed the government and the armed opposition should move to the next phase, direct engagement, but the current level of Taliban violence was unacceptable.

Abdullah stressed the need for securing a commitment from the Taliban to “reduction in violence, a ceasefire and continued engagement.
