21 security personnel killed in Kunduz attacks

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): At least 21 security personnel and two civilians were killed as a result of Taliban attacks in northern Kunduz province, sources said on Monday.

A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Talibaninfo-icon stormed security posts in the Rawzi area of Imam Sahib district on Sunday night.

He said six Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and as many policemen were killed and three others wounded in the overnight assault.

Four militants were also killed and several others wounded, the source added.

But Khalilullah Qadrizada, a member of the provincial council, said more than 10 security personnel had suffered casualties during the clash in Imaminfo-icon Sahib.

“The security situation has lately deteriorated in the district, where a clearing operation should be launched,” he suggested.

Yousaf Ayubi, the provincial council chairman, told Pajhwok six ANA soldiers, as many policemen, two Afghan Local Police members, one apprising group member and two civilians were killed in the attack.

He said at least 10 others were wounded, including two civilians.

Ismatullah Muradi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok eight security forces were killed and a 9th wounded in the firefight in Imam Sahib.

Muradi said three ANA personnel and three members of the Afghan Local Police were killed as the militants attacked their check-post in Chahar Dara district.

The Taliban claimed credit for the Imam Sahib attack. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said their fighters attacked a security check-post in the Bakhmal area of the district.

He claimed nine security personnel were killed and seven others wounded.
