5 US military bases in Afghanistan closed

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US has closed five military bases in Afghanistaninfo-icon in line with its peace agreement with the Talibaninfo-icon, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.

The bases were shut in Helmand, Uruzgan, Paktika and Laghman provinces, Tolo News quoted an unnamed Kabul-based American official as saying.

Earlier in the day, US peace Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, tweeted: “As we look to the next phase of implementation under the agreement, our approach will remain conditions based…”

He vowed the US would press for completion of prisoner releases, reduction of violence, complete delivery on counterterrorism commitments and start of and progress in intra-Afghan negotiations.
