Nearly 3,000 civilians suffer causalities in 6 months

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Nearly 3000 civilians suffered casualties during the first six months of the ongoing year --- 11 percent down compared to last year, said Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission on Tuesday.

AIHRC deputy head Mohammad Naeem Nazari told a press conference here that at least 1,213 people were killed and another 1744 were wounded as a result of 880 security incidents during the last six months.

Last year, he said, 970 people had been killed and 2350 others wounded in the same period and causalities figures of this year showed 11 percent decrease.

He added that 126 womeninfo-icon were among the dead and 171 women were among the injured --- 0.5 percent down over last year.

Nazari said 225 children were killed and 405 others wounded in the period and it showed 33 percent decrease over last year.

AIHRC findings show the Talibaninfo-icon killed 48.5 percent civilians, unknown individuals 26.7 percent, government forces 15.5 percent and 6.3 percent by Daesh, 2.3 percent by international forces and the rest causalities occurred as a result of firing rockets through Pakistani forces in Kunar, Kandahar, Paktia and Khost provinces.

He said 542 people have been killed and 89 others wounded in Taliban attacks in the six months -- 24 percent down to last year.

He added that 31 percent causalities resulted from targeted killing, 26 percent from roadside bombings, 12.7 percent  from rocket firing, 11.7 percent from suicide bombing and 11.5 percent from clashes and land fights.

According to the AIHRC report, 692 people have been killed and wounded in the southwestern zone, 544 in the central zone, 580 individuals in eastern zone, 344 in northeastern zone, 270 in northern zone, 240 in western zone and 276 in southern zone in the first six months of the ongoing year.

The AIHRC called on the warring parties to pay attention to civilian lives during their clashes and all cases in this regard should be investigated.
