Rouhani hopes for durable truce in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for the expansion of cooperative relations with Afghanistaninfo-icon in economic, trade and transit sectors.

Peace in Afghanistan meant and stability in the whole region, he said, insisting that Iran had been standing by the people and government of Afghanistan.

In a phone call with President Ashraf Ghani, Rouhani hoped the document on comprehensive Iran-Afghanistan cooperation would be completed soon.

"If the coronavirus permits, in an important meeting in coming months, we can also operationalise the Khaf-Herat railway line, in addition to signing the document of cooperation," he said.

According to IRNA, he hoped for a lasting ceasefire and de-escalation of tensions in the war-hit neighbour.

The intra-Afghan dialogue involving all political groups and the Talibaninfo-icon would prove fruitful, Rouhani believed.

Ghani commended Iran's support to the Afghan nation and government. He lauded Iran’s medical services to the Afghan migrants.

"Chabahar port is booming at a good pace and I hope the economic relations between the two countries would further improve," Ghani said.
