Universities to reopen from tomorrow, says govt

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Presidential Palace on Tuesday said universities would reopen from tomorrow and the Cabinet would decide about schools in its next meeting.

Almost four months back, the Afghan government closed all educationinfo-icon institutions, including all private and government universities, due to the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Seqiq Sediqi, spokesman for the Presidential Palace, told a press conference in Kabul that the plan of restarting universities by the Ministry of Higher Education was accepted by the Cabinet at today meeting.

He said all universities were urged to seriously consider and follow the guidelines by the Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

According to him, the Cabinet did not accept the Ministry of Education plan for resuming schools and urged the MoE to prepare another plan for its next meeting.

Earlier, private education institutions associations held protests in Kabul and urged the government to reopen private education institutions.

Meanwhile, thirty-six new Covid-19 cases have been registered in different parts of the country during the last 24 hours, taking the nation’s overall tally to 36,782.

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said in a statement that 187 individuals underwent tests during the period and 36 of them were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

The ministry called on people to follow medical instructions and guidelines to prevent further spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.
