Herat civil society activists oppose Loya Jirga

Herat civil society activists oppose Loya Jirga

Aug 06, 2020 - 15:38

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A number of civil societyinfo-icon activists in western Herat province on Thursday staged a rally in Herat City and expressed their opposition to Friday’s Consultative Loy Jirgainfo-icon (CLJ).

They claimed that President Ashraf Ghani by convening the assembly wanted to shift the burden of releasing the 400 dangerous Talibaninfo-icon prisoners to people’s shoulders.

The protestors termed the public event as against the country’s constitution, a mere demonstration and waste of resources.

The Jirga will cost 330 million afs to the national exchequer, with each participant costing 160,000 afs.

Abdul HadiQani, a civil society activist, said the government should spend the 330 million afs on development projects.

He said the release of Taliban prisoners had already been decided between the Taliban and the US and now the president wanted to put this responsibility on people’s shoulders.

Mohammad Ibrahim, another protester, opposed the jirga convention and claimed all decisions had already been taken and such programmes were meant to deceive public.

More than 4,500 Taliban prisoners have been freed while the release of 400 remaining Taliban will be decided in Friday’s Loya Jirgainfo-icon.
