In 5 months, 219 crime suspects detained in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok):  Intelligence operatives arrested hundreds of people over their alleged involvement in various crimes during the past five months in western Herat province, an official said Saturday.

The National Directorate Security (NDSinfo-icon) personnel arrested 219 people over various crimes during the period, said Ghulam Dawood Hashemi, Herat's deputy governor.

Announcing the five-month performance of the spy service to media, he said the detainees included 64 persons linked to terrorist incidents.

As many as 29 detainees faced kidnapping charges, and 49 were involved in various crimes. They included 43 people who had committed financial corruption and 34 others faced charges of armed robbery, the deputy governor said.

He stated the men were arrested in nine operations by National Directorate Security personnel in different parts of Herat province.

As many as 50 Kalashnikov assault rifles, 39 assault rifles, 20 various guns, 44 kilograms of explosives, 24 grenades, 75 landmines, 89 heavy machine guns, 10 undocumented vehicles and other equipment were recovered from the suspects.

Herat's deputy governor said cases of the detainees had been handed over to the judiciary and the arrest of 219 people had an effect on the security situation of the province.

Meanwhile, local residents expressed concern about armed robberies and kidnappings and criticized security institutions of the province.

A resident, Saeed Fakharudin said unfortunately despite the arrest of many criminals, robberies, terrorist acts and explosions continued to take place in the city of Herat in broad daylight.
