Loya Jirga panels suggest release of 400 Taliban prisoners

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The High National Reconciliation Council (HNRC) on Sunday said most of the Loya Jirgainfo-icon committees had suggested the release of remaining 400 Talibaninfo-icon prisoners so that no excuse was left for intra-Afghan talks.

The Consultative Loya Jirga (CLJ) was convened into session to debate the release of the controversial Taliban prisoners. The event featuresinfo-icon 3,500 participants.

Under the Feb. 29 peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban, Kabul has to free 5,000 Taliban inmates and in return, the militant movement has already released 1,000 government soldiers.

In a statement, HNRC said all committees of loya jirga submitted their suggestion reports to Loya Jirga head Dr. Abdullah Abdullah as of 12pm today.

“The release of 400 Taliban prisoners without any condition, early start of intra-Afghan talks inside Afghanistaninfo-icon and formation of inclusive delegation for talks are main suggestion of the committees,” the statement added.

“The release of prisoners on international guarantee, preservation of the republic, participation of all walks of life in intra-Afghan talks, international community’s support for these talks and peace agreement under the supervision and guarantee of the US are other suggestions of the committees,” the source added.

The statement quoted, Abdullah as saying to the committees: “Your advice and suggestions are very important to the government of Afghanistan and for HNRC and we would make good use of them in the negotiations.”
