Remarks about MP trigger clash in tribal assembly

Remarks about MP trigger clash in tribal assembly

Aug 08, 2020 - 15:15

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A verbal clash erupted in the Consultative Loya Jirgainfo-icon on Saturday when a member of the assembly sought an apology from lawmaker Belquis Roshan on Saturday.

The Consultative Loya Jirga (CLJ) convened into session on Friday to debate the release of the 400 Talibaninfo-icon prisoners the government is reluctant to free.

During President Ashraf Ghani’s address to the jirgainfo-icon yesterday, Roshan -- a Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon member from western Farah province -- protested the release of Taliban prisoners.

“Providing ransom to the brutal Taliban amounts to treason and a national betrayal,” read a white banner she unfolded during the inaugural session.

Ghani told Roshan he was not paying ransom to the Taliban and the fate of the 400 inmates would be decided by the Loya Jirga. Roshan, however, continued her protest.

As a result, a woman (security guard) shoved the female parliamentarian and then dragged her out during Ghani’s speech.

Today, heads of committees provided their reports. Asila Wardak, head of the 30th committee, demanded an apology from Roshan, remarking the Jirga was not a wrestling ring.

Later on, some other members hit out at Asila’s remarks and dubbed her call as a personal suggestion.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the jirga chief, stressed order in the grand assembly and said the suggestion and view of everyone should be heard.
